PPTA welcomes professional support for secondary teachers

20 June, 2011

PPTA president Robin Duff welcomed a commitment from the minister of education to provide professional support for secondary teachers.

Two professional support days were announced by the Ministry of Education to assist with planning and preparation for new NCEA standards after the phasing-in of the new curriculum-aligned standards began in 2010.

“Teachers will be relieved to get this added support. The extra workload generated by NCEA has been very heavy for secondary teachers,” said Robin Duff.

“Secondary teachers will be better placed to deliver the changes related to NCEA with two additional days,” he said.

He said he welcomed the announcement as part of an ongoing commitment to fully support the implementation of NCEA in schools.

“We look forward to working with NZQA and the ministry to ensure teachers and eventually students have as smooth a ride as possible,” he said.

The first professional support day is expected to take place by the end of July, and a second during term four and would include a planning and preparation toolkit for teachers to use – including course planning advice, templates and information on managing assessment and moderation.

“We’re pleased to see flexibility has been granted to Christchurch schools on the timing of these days,” said Robin Duff.
