EDS applauds excellent outcome for
Ngunguru Spit
Government announced earlier today that
Northland's Ngunguru Sandspit has been acquired by the
Department of Conservation. In a related transaction Todd
Property Group, the former owner of the Spit, has purchased
the former Napier Hospital site.
"This is an excellent
outcome for Ngunguru Spit," said EDS Policy Director Raewyn
Peart.
"There have been numerous attempts to acquire the
sandspit into public ownership since the early 1970s, but
all failed
"EDS would like to commend the efforts of Todd
Property Group Managing Director Evan Davies, Minister of
Conservation Kate Wilkinson and the Ngunguru Sandspit
Protection Society in finally getting there.
"EDS has long
argued for the need for better protection of our coastline.
It is great to see innovative approaches taken, such as
this, to achieve that
end.
