Age Concern and Grey Power Meet Pre-Election
At a meeting held at Age Concern New Zealand’s National Office, Grey Power and Age Concern New Zealand representatives discussed key issues for older people in the lead up to the General Election.
The two organisations have many common concerns such as income and health issues, including access to after-hours medical care.
Age Concern New Zealand and Grey Power agree after-hours health care is often expensive and difficult to get to.
Age Concern National President Liz Baxendine would like to see a reduction in the cost of doctors’ visits for older people and the option of affordable home visits for those aged 65-plus.
“Lowering the cost of visiting the doctor would help older people avert health crises and avoid unplanned hospital admissions,” she says.
Other common key concerns included social isolation and loneliness.
Mrs Baxendine says the health risks of social isolation are comparable to those of smoking, high blood pressure and obesity.
Age Concern’s
Accredited Visiting Service helps socially isolated older
people to keep good health and stay connected with their
community.
According to Mrs Baxendine, older people also
need information; advice, referral and advocacy. Many
seniors require help from lots of different agencies. Age
Concern is well-placed to coordinate these referrals.
Government needs to ensure these this vital service co-ordination work is provided for those in need.
“Older people will benefit as Grey Power and Age Concern stand together on these and other issues,” she says.
