PSA celebrates members on Social Workers’ Day
Today is Social Workers’ Day, a day in which the PSA is proud to honour its members who work in this important and demanding field.
This year’s theme – Social Workers Respond to Natural and Global Disaster – couldn’t be more fitting.
“For example, our members’ response to the tragic Christchurch earthquakes was inspirational and an indisputable illustration of how when times are tough, people rely even more upon strong community & public services,” says Acting PSA National Secretary Jeff Osborne.
“Our members’ on-going commitment to clients & the community was seen in their determination to get back to work on the 22 February.
“Our social worker members deliver vital public services to society’s most vulnerable people. And as society becomes more unequal in the distribution of wealth and opportunities this becomes even more important.
“However, the pressure on social workers will build as they pick up the pieces of public service cuts and job losses.
“And it is children who will pay the biggest price – their futures blighted by the poverty, stress and lost educational opportunities of an unequal society. “Social workers confront this tragedy daily, working to alleviate family pressures and protect children from neglect and violence.
“The PSA is proud to count social workers amongst its members. Wherever they work, whether for Child, Youth and Family, for a community trust or for a district health board, the PSA will continue its commitment to represent social workers as they improve their working lives, caseloads and gain recognition of their value to society,” says Jeff Osborne.
