Maritime Union of New Zealand backs MMP

The Maritime Union is backing keeping the MMP voting system in the upcoming Referendum on Saturday 26 November.

Maritime Union of New Zealand General Secretary Joe Fleetwood says the Union was recommending its members and all working people vote to retain MMP.

Mr Fleetwood says MMP was more representative and more democratic than other systems.

"There is no perfect voting system but MMP provides the best mix of local and proportional representation."

He says under MMP everyone's vote counts.

"In the past we saw Government's elected with a minority of votes around the country. How is that fair?"

The major parties are more accountable under MMP, and we have a more diverse group of people elected to Parliament who represent what New Zealanders think in a fair and accurate way, he says.

"Let's keep MMP."
