Celebrating our Past, Supporting our Future

In this issue:

Help Us Celebrate our 100th Newsletter Birthday Party. But Please, Bring a Present!

For the first time in six years, there is a 'sea change' in public and political attitudes toward crime and punishment. Media commentators, criminal justice professionals, policy analysts ,politicians are all saying the same thing. There is a transformative shift away from criminal justice strategies that focus on command and control, toward a more informed commitment to 'what works'. It is a shift from 'tough on crime' to 'smart on crime'. People need good information more than ever before – the public now realise that what we have done over the last ten years is both unaffordable and ineffective.

Rethinking needs your financial support so that it can actively engage in promoting the sort of debate that will enable New Zealand to once again, lead the world in the development of innovative and workable criminal justice policies.

We have, until now, been reluctant to talk of our own achievements – keeping in mind the proverb, "kāore te kumara e kōrerotia i tōna reka" - "The kumara doesn't speak about how sweet it is”. This edition is different. We are going to talk about our achievements, and for a very good reason. We need your financial support to enable this project to continue over the next three years.
