Government should take lead on Living Wage – PSA
The government should take the lead in any campaign to pay New Zealanders a Living Wage, the PSA’s National Secretary Richard Wagstaff says.
Labour leader David Shearer today floated the idea of a Living Wage – an amount which is set above the minimum wage and which allows people to provide a good living for them and their family.
“We think government should take the lead in paying a Living Wage. A Living Wage should be applied to anyone working in the public sector – and that includes people delivering contracted-out services,” Mr Wagstaff says.
“We have long argued that private contractors and NGOs who deliver public services should pay their staff a decent wage – and should be funded to do that by the government.
“In too many cases, contractors and NGOs appear cheaper than public providers not because they are innovative but because they pay their staff poorly.
“Introducing a Living Wage in government would begin to level the playing field – and would ensure that anyone delivering vital public services is properly paid.
“A Living Wage would also ensure that everyone working directly for the government was paid enough to live on – something we support.”
