Department Of Labour Appeals Safe Air Limited Sentence

MEDIA Release
29 June 2012

Department Of Labour Appeals Safe Air Limited Sentence

Lesley Haines, Head of Health and Safety, Department of Labour says:

The Department of Labour has filed an appeal over the District Court sentence imposed on Safe Air Limited after one of its engineers was killed while servicing an engine.

The Department prosecuted the company under the Health and Safety in Employment Act and the District Court imposed a fine of $56,250 and reparations of $22,250.

“The Department believes the fine imposed by the District Court Judge did not reflect the seriousness of this offence,” Ms Haines says.

The incident occurred at the Woodbourne Airfield near Blenheim on 8 August 2011.

The hearing is set down for the High Court in Blenheim on 24 September 2012
