Child sexual abuse is illegal and always harmful
MEDIA RELEASE
20 July 2012
Child sexual
abuse is illegal and always harmful – let justice
prevail!
“Questioning whether children who are subjected to sexual abuse by a parent experience significant harm is outrageous and minimises the seriousness of child sexual abuse” says Natalie Thorburn, spokesperson for the Coalition of the Safety of Women and Children.
Judge Perkins today gave credit to the suggestion that the psychological effect on the victim is due to her parents’ separation rather than the sexual assault by her father, demonstrating a clear lack of understanding of the dynamics and effects of sexual abuse.
The Courts’ failure to convict and sentence a comedian who pled guilty to sexually abusing his daughter clearly demonstrates a need for specialist courts and judges. The Judge has reserved his decision on the case until next Friday, stating that the extent to which the victim suffered harm must be established.
The violation of normal parent-child boundaries has a substantial impact on child victims, and can affect their ability to learn, trust, and form good relationships.
Violence against women and girls is a widespread social problem, with one in four Auckland girls being sexually abused.
It is imperative that the offender is sentenced and directed to attend sexual offender treatment to reduce the likelihood of repeat offending.
Child sexual abuse is a serious crime and is always unacceptable. The justice system needs to send the message to New Zealanders that there are significant consequences for offenders.
