Pike River Royal Commission Decides Not To Reconvene Public Hearings

The Royal Commission on the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy has decided not to reconvene its public hearings.

Counsel for certain former directors and officers of Pike River Coal Ltd had applied to reconvene the Phase Three hearings that examined “What happened at Pike River”.

The Commission has issued Minute Number 15: Application to reconvene hearings which outlines brief reasons for the decision. It is available from the Commission’s website: http://pikeriver.royalcommission.govt.nz/Our-Work#Minutes.

In summary, the Commission’s view is that it has sufficient evidence to answer its terms of reference and does not believe a further hearing is necessary.

The High Court judicial review seeking a reconvened hearing is to be heard on 3-4 September. The Commission is due to report by 28 September 2012.
