False accusations made
On Friday 17 August 2012, Maori TV broadcast a story concerning Glenis Philip-Barbara and Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori on its Te Kaea programme.
The programme included a number of allegations which are false and defamatory, including allegations of mismanagement, misappropriation of public money and greed. The programme provided no evidence which would justify these allegations, all of which are strongly denied.
The allegations broadcast by Maori TV are highly damaging to the reputation of Te Taura Whiri and Ms Philip-Barbara. As such Māori Television have been approached for an immediate apology and retraction. Te Taura Whiri and Ms Philip-Barbara have taken legal advice and are considering further action if an acceptable apology is not broadcast. Any further repetition will also be strongly challenged.
The Te Taura Whiri Board has expressed its confidence in and support for Ms Philip-Barbara.
