Minister’s office offers nothing but false hope

The Minister of Labour Kate Wilkinson’s office has now resorted to offering false hope to New Zealand employers and employees as it continues her delay in resolving Part 6A of the Employment Relations Act 2000.

“On Monday 17 September we were told that an announcement regarding Part 6A will be made in the next few days, alongside the releasing of the Report on the Review of Part 6A. It’s now Friday and still no action from the Minister,” said Grant McLauchlan, Managing Director of Crest Commercial Cleaning.

“While the Minister has focused efforts this week on saving native species in her role as Minister of Conservation, dozens of cases continue to line up before the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court as a result of Part 6A resulting in significant loss of productivity for New Zealand businesses.”

“We’re thankful the Minister is now aware of concerns about Part 6A, but in raising expectations that she is about to make an announcement this week, and finally release a report that has been on her desk for nearly a year, we hoped she would have delivered,” said Mr McLauchlan.

Part 6 A was passed by Parliament in 2004 and amended in 2006, with a provision requiring the Department of Labour to review the law after three years. In 2009 the Minister announced employment provisions under Part 6A of the Act would be reviewed.

“Maybe next week we’ll finally see a decision made on Part 6A, but just in case we’re not holding our breath.” Mr McLauchlan said.
