Prison Sentences For Assaulting Elderly

Grey Power National President, Roy Reid, is disgusted at the assault of an 82 year partially-blind elderly man in Wellington and says that anyone convicted of assaulting a superannuitant should automatically face a manditory minimum prison term of 3 years.

This sentencing could also be extended to include assault on a police or prison officer during the course of their duty.

In the last 50 years attitudes toward elderly have gradually changed and today, lack of respect and lack of consideration is evident.

It has been observed there is greater tendency toward violence among some young people today.

What is of greater concern is the fact Ministry of Health policy is encouraging older people to stay in their homes and this enables them to retain independence longer.

Older people should feel safe in their homes particularly if they live alone.

There have been assaults where the elderly are targeted, not only in Wellington, but also other parts of the country.

There are over 600,000 superannuitants living in NZ today.
