Govt’s Constitutional Panel Pushes Maori Privilege

Press Statement From The Independent Constitutional Review Panel - Immediate Release

Govt’s Constitutional Panel Pushes Maori Privilege

A government-appointed group set up to advise on constitutional change is little more than a spokesman for further Maori privilege, according to an analysis prepared by David Round, who is chairman of the Independent Constitutional Review Panel (ICRP).

Mr Round has prepared a detailed analysis of the government-appointed Constitutional Advisory Panel’s report titled New Zealand’s Constitution; The Conversation So Far.

“The very name ‘conversation’ is laughable, for no New Zealanders, bar the carefully-selected few, have even heard of the government panel, let alone conversed with it”, Mr Round said.

His analysis, published electronically on the ICRP’s website HERE, says that the panel’s report “avoids unpalatable facts and difficult questions, and contains numerous examples of half-truths and racist political positions”.

“This panel is allegedly impartial. Yet it tells us what we ‘must’ do, and that is to give much greater legal authority to ‘Treaty principles’, and entrench a racial minority in a position of perpetual privilege.”

Mr Round said that the clear agenda of the government panel was “divisive, racist and objectionable to most New Zealanders of all races”. He questioned why public money was going to be spent for a further year on a “charade” of consultation that would only lead to an unacceptable conclusion.

“We must also ask the Prime Minister if his party supports the radical changes its panel is already floating”, Mr Round said.
