National Vote Up But Election Would be Too Close to Call

National (45.5%) Vote Up. Strong Lead Over Labour (33.5%)
However Election Would Be Too Close To Call

Today’s New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows a slight increase in support for Prime Minister John Key’s National Party to 45.5% (up 0.5% since November 12-25, 2012). Support for Key’s Coalition partners shows the Maori Party 1.5% (up 0.5%), ACT NZ 1% (up 0.5%) and United Future 0% (down 0.5%).

Support for Labour is 33.5% (up 2%); Greens are 11% (down 2.5%), New Zealand First 5% (down 1.5%), Mana Party 1% (up 1%), Conservative Party of NZ 1% (down 0.5%) and Others 0.5% (up 0.5%).

If a National Election were held today this NZ Roy Morgan Poll says the result would be too close to call.

The latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating is up 8pts to 119 (the highest since April 16-29, 2012) with 53% (up 4.5%) of New Zealanders saying New Zealand is ‘heading in the right direction’ compared to 34% (down 3.5%) that say New Zealand is ‘heading in the wrong direction’.

Gary Morgan says:

“Today’s New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows Prime Minister John Key’s National (45.5%, up 0.5%) maintaining a strong lead over the main Opposition Labour Party (33.5%, up 2%). Support for third party the Greens has fallen to 11% (down 2.5%).

“The strong leadership shown in late November by Opposition Labour Party Leader David Shearer in dealing with a potential leadership challenge from David Cunliffe that never eventuated has reinvigorated Shearer’s leadership and appears responsible for the increase in Labour support. Shearer was unanimously endorsed by the Labour caucus and he promptly stripped Cunliffe of his front bench position and portfolio.

“As 2012 comes to a close the two sides of politics in New Zealand are locked closely together with the governing National/ Maori Party/ ACT NZ/ United Future coalition (48%, up 1%) just behind the Parliamentary Opposition — Labour/ Greens/ NZ First/ Mana Party (50.5%, down 1%).”
