New Deputy State Services Commissioner Appointed

State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie has announced today that the new Deputy State Services Commissioner will be Sandi Beatie.

Ms Beatie, who is currently a Deputy Commissioner at the State Services Commission, will take up her role on 1 April 2013 replacing John Ombler who recently retired.

“Ms Beatie has extensive experience working at senior levels in central and local government as well as the private sector and is well known to Ministers and government leaders,” said Mr Rennie.

“She has taken a leading role in implementing change in the public service and is well qualified for this important role ensuring government agencies focus on achieving the Government’s result areas and delivering better public services,” he said.

The Deputy State Services Commissioner is a statutory appointment, made by the Governor -General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

The major role of the position is to support the State Services Commissioner by undertaking statutory responsibilities such as the appointment of Public Service chief executives, reviewing the performance of chief executives and departments and leading machinery of government reviews across all areas of government.

Prior to joining SSC in 2011, Ms Beatie was Deputy Chief Executive at the Ministry of Justice. She led collaborative efforts across the Justice Sector including strategy development and four-year Budget planning.

Ms Beatie has extensive experience in leading and implementing change and in her final months in Justice ensured the merger of the Legal Services Agency into the Ministry and the accompanying policy and functional changes.

In 2010 she was seconded to the Department of Corrections to lead a programme of work to lift departmental performance and successfully re-introduced private sector management into New Zealand’s prison system.
