Korero Mai Ki Au broadcast: Same-sex marriage, and terrorism

Saturday 12.00 - 12.30pm
Sunday 12.00 - 12.30pm
both shows repeated from 5pm onwards

Saturday 20th April 2013 - This week the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment bill, better known as the same sex marriage bill passed its third parliamentary reading by an overwhelming 77 votes to 44. Many say it’s about time while others are steadfastly against it. Eruera Morgan speaks with Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell, who canvassed his constituency and Maori in general to get a handle the general views of Te Ao Maori. He surmised that traditionally Maori culture recognised gay or takatapui whanaunga, they were accepted and in many instances became leaders.

NZ First was very clear where they stood, opposed it fervently and called for a referendum. Eruera speaks with the party’s mangai reo Maori Pita Paraone.

Sunday 21st April 2013 - The western world was once again on red alert after the bombings attacks in Boston. Terrorism domestic or foreign is still horrendous but there are some who obviously view it as a means to wage war with the rest of society. It’s unfortunate but for some it’s a way of evening up the battlefield when it comes to waging war against as Super Power the likes of the United States, China and Russia.

Also this week Prime Minister John Key announced sweeping changes to GCSB giving it more powers to spy on New Zealanders. Eruera speaks with Massey University lecturer Tumatakuru O’Connell who has a strong interest in pre and post colonial development, 20th century international politics and 21st century globalisation in the information age. Tumatakuru gives his analysis on the information available to date, around what might provoke an internal terrorist attack in the US. He also talks about the new sweeping changes and powers to the GSCB and how it may impact on Maori.
