Letter of Complaint to Susan Devoy

MEDIA ADVISORY

MANA PARTY

THURSDAY 30TH MAY 2013

Media are advised that the following letter of complaint was officially sent to the Race Relations Conciliator’s Office earlier this morning. A copy of that letter is below.

30 May 2013

Susan Devoy
Race Relations Commissioner
infoline@hrc.co.nz

Kia ora Susan,

Request for you to defend Maori and Pacifika children from racist attack

We are requesting you step into the row over a nasty, racist cartoon which appeared in the Marlborough Express yesterday.

This cartoon of overweight Polynesian students – one with what appears to be ethnic tattoos – using the breakfast in schools programme as a scam to save money for smokes, alcohol and the pokies plays to the lazy racism and deep bigotry of many well off Pakeha.

Most sickeningly it’s an attack on the most vulnerable children in New Zealand who don’t have the opportunity to fight back and defend themselves.

We believe it is not just insensitive to the 270,000 New Zealand kids growing up in poverty but it’s inviting the public to scorn these children as devious parasites.

We request you step in quickly to defend these most vulnerable New Zealand children and hold the Marlborough Express to account for this attack on our kids.

I look forward to hearing from you without delay.

Regards,

John Minto
Co-Vice President
