Made Your Choice In the Māori Electoral Option?

The Māori Electoral Option is now over half-way through, and as a reminder, the Electoral Commission is sending a postcard to the 366,000 enrolled Māori who have not sent back a form to exercise their choice.

“If you receive a postcard and want to stay with the roll type you’re on, that’s great, you don’t need to do anything more,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager, Enrolment Services. “But if you do want to change, or want to update your details, it’s easy. Either fill in the form we sent in March, or fill in a new enrolment form and send it back.”

During the Māori Electoral Option, Māori can choose whether they want to be on the Māori Electoral Roll, or the General Electoral Roll for when they vote in the next two General Elections and any by-elections.

“Remember, you can only make your choice once during the Option period,” says Mr Wicks. “You will not be able to change again until the next Māori Electoral Option, which is planned for 2018.”

”If you need to enrol or update your details fill in an enrolment form - it’s easy!” says Mr Wicks.

To get an enrolment form, go online at elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676, call 0800 36 76 56, or visit any PostShop.

More information about enrolling to vote is available at www.elections.org.nz.
