‘Out of Gate’ Prisoner Reintegration Programme

‘Out of Gate’ Prisoner Reintegration Programme gets Big Tick from Rethinking

“The Minister of Corrections, must be congratulated for the ‘Out the Gate’ Prisoner Reintegration Programme – it addresses a need which has been unmet for many years”, says Kim Workman, spokesperson for Rethinking Crime and Punishment. The programme targets the 6000 prisoners released every year, who serve two years or less.

“Prisoners within this group have usually spent previous time in prison for short periods, and are often ineligible for rehabilitation programmes. Providing post-release support for offenders in this category, can often be the difference between whether or not they reoffend. Even more important than help with accommodation, employment and life skills training, is knowing that members of the community are there to give a helping hand, and support a change in lifestyle."

“Often there is a gradual change with such offenders, where they offend less frequently and less seriously over time. Having provider and community support, who challenge such prisoners to shuck off their self-imposed “criminal” label, will accelerate their journey into responsible citizenship.”

”Fifty-eight percent of this group are Maori, so it will be important that Maori and Whanau Ora providers, take the opportunity to get involved.”
