Wellington Youth Call For Public Transport Step Change
18 June 2013
Youth climate change organisation Generation Zero has today welcomed the final report of the Wellington Public Transport Spine Study and says a step change solution is needed to maintain a vibrant and modern Wellington.
The study, begun in 2011, has evaluated options for a high quality public transport spine running through the Wellington City CBD/Central Wellington area, including light rail.
Spokesperson Paul Young said:
“As young people who want solutions to climate change, our vision is for smart, efficient transport powered by renewable energy.
“We also want to live in a vibrant and modern Wellington. A forward-thinking public transport step change is key to preserving and improving on the things we love about our city.
“Cities which give people the freedom of good transport choice – by making it easy, cheap and safe to get around without a car – offer a better way of life, a better local economy, and a better future in the face of rising oil prices and climate change.
“We welcome the release of the final Spine Study report and look forward to the debate on how to move forward from here.
“We are convinced that Wellington needs a dedicated transit corridor - whether light rail or buses ultimately come out on top. Tinkering around the edges with the current setup will just delay progress and be more expensive in the long run.
“We’re looking forward to reading the final report in detail as we form an opinion on the solutions offering the best prospects for our city.
“Car travel and car ownership is falling markedly amongst people under 30 - one of many reasons that the future lies in providing for smart transport choice.
“A top quality public transport solution for Wellington’s centre is a vital ingredient in keeping and attracting young professionals and making Wellington a place where talent wants to live.”
