Why you should care about the GCSB & TICS Bills

Why you should care about the GCSB & TICS Bills

The government of New Zealand has launched an unprecedented attack on human rights and it is imperative that we defend those rights.

Privacy is a fundamental human right - John Key invited the media to his tea party with John Banks in an election stunt, and then complained to Police when the conversation was inadvertently recorded. We all have the right to our private communications to remain private.

The government spied illegally on New Zealand citizens, and is now trying to legitimize their illegal actions. Two wrongs don't make a right.

There is massive opposition to this Bill from private citizens as well as the Human Rights Commission, the Law Society, the Privacy Commission, the Council for Civil Liberties, and a number of other organisations and individuals who are strongly opposed to the Bill for very good reason.

This is one of a number of Bills which have been rammed through parliament under 'urgency' without proper consultation in order to implement a political agenda that is not in the public interest.

This government claims a mandate, but changes which impact our Bill of Rights in such a way should not be passed with such minimal support and require a much more robust process and consensus.

The epidemic of leaks from government departments shows that they are incapable of keeping our information safe, that much is indisputable.

Evidence shows that information is being gathered for foreign interests and corporate interests - not the interests of NZ citizens.
