Clean Up Karori anti-graffiti initiative needed

“Karori deserves a clean up graffiti initiative like Newtown's,” says Onslow-Western’s Hayley Robinson, “a proposal has been sent to WCC this morning. Over a hundred tagged or defaced sites have been identified and are being logged with the Council.”

Mrs Robinson spent Saturday morning (7th September) listening to, and talking with, the organisers of Clean Up Newtown. She was blown away by the community spirit the event (now in its third month) has engendered.

Organiser David Wilcock explained that the flow-on effects have been dramatic: with residents now getting out and picking up litter because they don’t want their beautiful suburb trashed.

“It is a brilliant example of efficient resource use, and partnership between residents, businesses, and Council,” says Mrs Robinson, “I am hopeful that we can get an identical project up and running for Karori; and it’s something practical I can work on, regardless of whether I am elected in October.“

Businesses in Karori appear very supportive of the concept. The Cellar Room on Karori Road is constantly battling tagging, and cannot convince their bin supplier to replace the graffiti-covered recycling bin outside the business, which potentially is attracting more tagging. Michael (manager) is hopeful that a Clean Up Karori initiative would make a difference.

Mrs Robinson is aiming for a regular event, on the third Saturday of each month. Details will be made available on her website, www.hayleyrobinson.com, as they become available.
