“Taurua will face Police complaint if he doesn’t back down” – Ngapuhi elder

Ngapuhi elder David Rankin has warned Kingi Taurua that if he doesn’t back down from his threat to vandalise a monument at Waitangi, he will lay a complaint with the Police against Taurua for threatening criminal damage.

Taurua has publically threaten to demolish the monument if Prince William does not visit Waitangi during the forthcoming Royal Visit.

“This monument was paid for by my great-grandparents”, says Mr Rankin, “and if Kingi (or Albi prior to the Maori renaissance) doesn’t cease with this village-idiot behaviour, I will be going to the Auckland Police Station and laying a complaint against him’.

“He has until this Tuesday (11 March) at midday to publically withdraw his threat. If he doesn’t”, warns Mr Rankin, “he will have to answer to the Police for his threats against our whanau’s property.”

When asked why Mr Taurua has made the threat to damage the monument, he responded “I think he needs psychiatric help, but that’s something for the courts to decide.”
