NZ Abortion Industry Complicit in Human Rights Abuses
New Zealand Abortion Industry Complicit in Human Rights Abuses
Media Release 4th October 2014
China’s notorious one child family policy is a serious violation of human rights. The government has decreed that it has the right to deny the God given right of families to decide how many children they will have. It has resulted in the most horrendous human rights abuses inflicted on women that the world has ever seen with over 400 million abortions, forced sterilisations and punitive fines.
Right to Life believes that the New Zealand abortion industry is complicit in enforcing China’s infamous one child family policy of forced abortions on Chinese students in New Zealand. In 2013 the Abortion Supervisory Committee reported to Parliament that there were 879 abortions on non residents reported for the 2012 year . In 2013 there were 25,345 students from China studying in New Zealand. According to a study conducted by Professor Felicity Goodyear Smith in 2008, the majority of abortions on Asians in New Zealand are on non-resident students from China.
China’s one child family policy prohibits women from having a child out of wedlock. Single pregnant women in China are ordered to have the child killed in the womb. It is a huge culture shock for Chinese students coming to New Zealand, where we have a sexually permissive society. Female Chinese students in New Zealand, are directed by the Chinese government to have the child killed before birth. If they returned to China with a child they would face punitive fines of up to eight times their annual income and possible confiscation of the child that would be put up for adoption.
It is tragedy that Chinese students are victimised by China’s infamous family policy that does not allow these young women to choose life for their baby and have them placed for adoption in New Zealand, which would be the loving option.
It is believed that many of these young distressed pregnant students would come to Family Planning for help. It is known that Family Planning, through statements made by its former executive director, Dr Gil Greer, fully support China’s one child family policy with forced abortions. These young students are guests in our country and we have a duty to look after them.
It is a national scandal that these young Chinese women, strangers in a foreign country, who in their hour of need seek help are offered the murder of their child in the womb as a solution to their problem. Shame on us.
The community has a right to know what action the Family Planning Association takes to protect the human rights of the Chinese mother and the right to life of her child. How can the Association justify giving support for China’s policy of forced abortions for unauthorized pregnancies? Why is the Abortion Supervisory Committee not concerned that Chinese students are being forced to have abortions in New Zealand to comply with the abusive and tyrannical policy of China that decides which children shall live and which children shall be killed?
