New employment law will hurt the most vulnerable New Zealanders
The Public Service Association (PSA) says changes to the Employment Relations Act, expected to be passed in Parliament tonight, will hurt vulnerable workers and their families more than anyone.
Erin Polaczuk, PSA national secretary, said “These laws will force many New Zealanders into accepting lower wages and lower working conditions,”
“Union members will be protected from many of the most damaging changes, but many workers fall outside of that protection.
“Bad employers will be empowered by this law while our most vulnerable workers will be hurt.
“Unions often set the standards in terms and conditions, and the more members we have the stronger we can be.
“PSA members made nearly 8000 submissions to Select Committee, now we need to help spread the benefits of union membership wider.
“The Government didn’t listen to our submissions, but our members will continue to demand fair employment conditions from their employers.
“Speaking out for workers’ rights is vital and the PSA will continue to do so,” said Erin Polaczuk.
