RSA Offers Condolences To Victims Of Sydney Siege

As an organisation representing over 100,000 New Zealanders, the RSA has today condemned the actions taken by Man Haron Monis during his siege in a Sydney café, and offered their deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson who died as a result.

RSA National President, BJ Clark, says New Zealand shares a close bond with Australia and that he joins with RSA members across the country in expressing his grief and shock over the tragic events that took place.

“Our two nations share the Anzac values of courage, commitment, compassion and camaraderie. The attack by Man Haron Monis completely goes against these principles and we cannot but condemn his actions as reprehensible,” says Mr Clark.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the loved ones of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson who lost their lives as the siege came to an end. To lose family members is always difficult, but even more so as we approach Christmas. Kia kaha, stand strong – our thoughts are with you.”

The RSA also paid tribute to the police and emergency services who put their lives at risk to rescue and support the hostages.

“Sometimes we take our emergency services for granted but it’s events like this that remind us how much we need them,” says Mr Clark.

“Today we stand with Australia in thanking all of our service people, military and civilian, for the sacrifices they are prepared to make on our behalf.”
