Record Renewables in 2014

Record Renewables in 2014

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment today released the December quarter 2014 edition of the NZ Energy Quarterly. This publication showed that renewable electricity generation contributed almost 80% of New Zealand’s electricity during the 2014 calendar year.

“At almost 80%, the share of renewable electricity generation in 2014 was the highest since 1996,” said Bryan Field, MBIE’s Manager of Modelling and Sector Trends.

“Geothermal electricity generation contributed more electricity than natural gas during 2014, this is the first time that this has happened in 40 years,” he continued.

The latest data also showed that electricity demand for the 2014 year was 1.3% higher than in 2013.

“Electricity demand during the December quarter 2014 was 3.6% higher than in the December quarter 2013. This was largely due to increased irrigation demand as a result of the very dry weather in parts of the country,” Mr Field also added.

The NZ Energy Quarterly is available free of charge from the Ministry’s Economic Development website: http://www.med.govt.nz/sectors-industries/energy/energy-modelling/publications/new-zealand-energy-quarterly
