Union concerned over dangerous changes to Waikato DHB’s mental health system

The union representing mental health workers at Waikato DHB, The Public Service Association (PSA), is concerned over the poor process as the DHB tries to push through dangerous changes to the rostering of the Henry Bennett Centre.

Erin Polaczuk, PSA national secretary, said “PSA mental health workers are particularly concerned that the consultation document proposes a roster with no fixed pattern. This could potentially lead to staff fatigue and a breakdown in communication around patient care,”

“We are disappointed that we were only given half an hour to look at the Waikato DHB rostering consultation document before it was distributed to staff.

“DHB chief executive Nigel Murray has not yet even bothered to acknowledge our letter of 10 April outlining our concerns.

“It is irresponsible for Waikato DHB to push for such a radical review during the current investigation into the tragic death of a patient at Henry Bennett Centre.

“This review is too narrow and overlooks our severe concerns we have outlined about the running of mental health facilities at Waikato Hospital,” said Erin Polaczuk.
