Help save kids’ lives now say Police #SaveKidsLives
CEO of ANPZAA Jon White
announced today activities of Australia and New Zealand
policing in support of the Third UN Global Road Safety Week
(4–10 May 2015). This campaign is calling for action to
save childrens’ lives on the roads around the world (www.savekidslives2015.org).
“Police were devastated at the loss of young lives last year. 128 children[1] died last year on Australian and New Zealand roads[2]. These are preventable deaths and we all need to take action to ensure the safety of all our children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews,” said Jon White.
Five key road safety tips for children are: be visible on the road; cross where you can be seen, make sure you and your bicycle can be seen; use the appropriate seat in your car; and make sure you always wear your seatbelt.
“It is also about educating our children about roads and road safety. Police as part of this campaign are participating and hosting a number of events where they will be engaging with kids and their families to raise awareness and promote safety on and around our roads,” says Jon White.
Police activities include visiting schools and hosting awareness events alongside road safety partners as well as targeting offences that have an impact on the safety of children on our roads (school zones and crossings, speeding, seatbelt and bicycle helmet offences). These activities also support the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety which was launched in May 2011.
The Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) is the agency that serves Police Commissioners in Australia and New Zealand.
