Human Rights Commission pays tribute to Wellington lawyer Lecretia Seales

The Human Rights Commission paid tribute to the late Wellington lawyer Lecretia Seales today.

"Lecretia Seales was a brave woman who ignited an important public discussion about assisted death," said Human Rights Commission Legal Manager Janet Anderson-Bidois.

“The Court’s decision has clarified the current law and it is clear that any potential changes in this area would need to be initiated by Parliament. Irrespective of individual viewpoints on assisted dying, it is important that public debate about these matters take place in a robust and informed way. Key human rights concepts such as dignity, personal autonomy and the right to life must be carefully considered if any legislative change is to be contemplated.”

“Our thoughts are with Lecretia’s friends and whanau at this very sad time."
