Get Smart - The People's Review of the Intelligence Services
Get Smart - The People's Review of the Intelligence Services
26th July 2015
The NZ Council for Civil
Liberties is pleased to host Get Smart - the People's Review
of the Intelligence Services.
"We don't have any faith in the government's review of the intelligence services so we decided to organise our own," says Thomas Beagle, Chairperson of the New Zealand Council for Civil Liberties. These public meetings will be open to all in Wellington and Auckland.
"We have serious concerns about government spying in New Zealand and believe it undermines freedom of expression and weakens our democracy. More people are aware of government surveillance and spying now and this is having a chilling effect on people's willingness to speak up and get involved," continues Mr Beagle.
The Intelligence Review is a review of New Zealand's intelligence services being conducted by Michael Cullen (ex-politician) and Patsy Reddy (lawyer and board member). Public submissions are due on August 14th with the final report expected on or before 29th February.
"There are no public meetings or any real attempt at public engagement so we're inviting people to come along to Get Smart and have a chance to share their views," said Thomas. These will then be collated to create the People's Review of the Intelligence Services.
