Blessie: Sos to Simon Bridges to Change Law
Blessie: Sos to Simon Bridges to Change
Law
6th August

“Mr Bridges is now in a position to instigate a review of New Zealand’s Justice System to ensure a repeat of the Blessie Gotingco tragedy never happens again.” Garth McVicar
The Sensible
Sentencing Trust is calling for Simon Bridges to change the
law to prevent further victims and tragedies like the
slaying of Blessie Gottingco.
In 2006 Simon Bridges was
Crown Prosecutor after Tony Robertson had kidnapped and
molested a 5-year-old girl as she walked to school in
Tauranga, and says, "It was a chilling case. Robertson would
be one of New Zealand's coldest and worst offenders."
Yet despite that Mr Bridges call for a sentence of preventive detention was ignored by Justice Keane who instead imposed a sentence of eight years in prison. Justice Keane’s decision that day allowed Robertson to kill and rape Blessie Gotingco.
McVicar says Justice Keane actions signed
Blessie Gotingco’s death warrant.
“The debacle that
has unfolded around this case is evidence that very little
has changed and New Zealand’s justice System badly needs a
major overhaul.”
“Simon Bridges is now in a position
to instigate that review and prevent any further tragedies
such as this.”
