Christchurch rebuild projects should go to New Zealand companies first

The union for workers in the Christchurch rebuild is concerned that large public construction contracts are going to foreign-owned companies instead of local businesses.

EPMU Construction understands that the contract for Christchurch Hospital’s new Acute Services Building will be awarded to an Australian company, even though New Zealand suppliers tendered for it.

“We’re concerned that the government isn’t giving priority to Kiwi companies,” says Ron Angel, EPMU Construction industry organiser.

“We’re talking about a significant sum of public money, which should be reinvested in the New Zealand economy, not delivered to overseas shareholders.

“It’s a big job, and it needs to be done properly and efficiently – but there are Kiwi companies who could do it to. We’re just asking the government to buy Kiwi made wherever they can.”

EPMU Construction works with all companies involved in large rebuild projects to ensure proper health and safety, and fair wages and conditions for construction workers.
