Kiwi women working for free

New Zealand’s gender pay gap means that women are effectively working for free from today until the end of the year, according to Pay Equity Coalition Spokesperson, Wellington, Angela McLeod.

The pay gap between men and women’s pay, as measured by average hourly pay is 14%, according to the 2015 Annual Income Survey.

Events in Auckland and Wellington are being held to support action to address the barriers to equal pay.

“We are very excited that caregivers’ pay could lift soon as a result of the Kristine Bartlett case taken by the Service and Food Workers Union, now E tū, which is strongly supported by union members and equal pay campaigners. Addressing the barriers to equal pay for caregivers will result in these underpaid women workers being paid fairly.”

“New Zealand women were the first women in the world to successfully win the right to vote – let’s be the first country to successfully win equal pay as well,” McLeod said.
