Beneficiaries backpayed their day

Beneficiaries backpayed their day

After a facebook campaign which some thought was a scam, the first claimants for backpayment of their days from W&I have been paid.

Kay Berereton benefit advocate says; “This is great news for everyone involved, it was really a leap of faith for these first claimants that they really were going to be paid, and it was worth lodging a review. Now that these people are getting paid I expect that there will be many others wanting to claim the days they are owed.

It has been a lot of hard work trying to get the word out to people about this claim, and I have found that many people didn’t believe W&I would pay even if it was the law.

The campaign to make people aware of this issue has been largely a facebook campaign, managed by volunteers who have been supported by donations to cover the postage and printing costs.

As claims will need to be in by mid December there will now be a scramble to lodge in time. It would be great if W&I would pay the people on benefits what they know they owe them, leaving only those not on a benefit needing to claim, this would save time and money all round.

Hopefully many people will be paid before Christmas, giving many local economies a welcome addition to the pre-Christmas spend.

For people on a benefit the somewhere between $40 and a few hundred they receive is going to make a brighter day, and most likely be spend with local retailers.”
