NZ's climate record exposed at Paris Climate talks

NZ's climate record exposed at Paris Climate talks: Crumbs for climate-vulnerable communities, bounties for big oil.

4 December 2015

The New Zealand Youth Delegation’s analysis of the recent report from Oil Change International and Climate Action Network confirms New Zealand's position as a serial subsidiser of fossil fuels and the least generous aid donor per capita. Analysis shows that New Zealand's per capita ratio of fossil fuel production subsidies to Green Climate Fund (GCF) funding is the worst among the Group of 7 (G7) + Australia. Oil Change International is an independent research, communication, and advocacy organisation focused on exposing the true costs of fossil fuels and facilitating the coming transition towards clean energy.

“For every one dollar invested into helping vulnerable communities cope with climate change, the government wastes nearly five on subsidising fossil fuels. Our miserly contribution of $3.58 (2.56USD) million on projects that assist countries like the Philippines build seawalls to prepare for rising sea levels is one of the lowest in the developed world per capita, with each New Zealander giving about 86 cents (0.57USD). Billion dollar fossil fuel companies like Shell receive tax breaks and subsidies from New Zealand to the tune of $84.92 (57USD)million per year; or nearly $20 per New Zealander. It’s obvious that the government’s priorities need adjustment.” said NZYD Spokesperson Francisco Hernandez.

“As young Kiwis who believe in fair play, we’re even more disappointed that the Prime Minister is trying to pull the wool over our eyes by pretending New Zealand are leaders in fossil fuel subsidy reform. We’re calling on Prime Minister John Key to future proof New Zealand by stopping fossil fuel subsidies and investing in clean energy alternatives so we can have a safe and liveable climate for us and our children. ”
