Greymouth rubbish and recycling workers to strike

Greymouth rubbish and recycling workers to strike

Waste collection in the Grey District will be put on hold today as local rubbish and recycling workers strike in protest at their employer’s refusal to settle a collective agreement, says FIRST Union organiser Rachel Boyack.

The workers are employed by Subloos, an Australian-based company that contracts waste management services to the Grey District Council.

“A majority of workers at Subloos in Greymouth are union members, yet the company is still refusing to settle a date for bargaining.”

“The company has even gone so far as to say that it doesn’t recognise the role of unions. The company appears not to know that the West Coast is the birthplace of unionism in New Zealand,” says Boyack.

“These workers deserve the security that a collective agreement offers.”

“The local council should urge Subloos to come to the bargaining table and settle a collective agreement with workers.”
