Euthanasia Declaration Overwhelmingly Rejected by European Parliament

The European Parliament has this month overwhelmingly rejected a declaration that included support for euthanasia. This rejection should be an example to our Parliament on the rejection of a culture of death in which the killing of the vulnerable in our society, the aged, the disabled and the seriously ill is promoted under the guise of compassion. The European Parliament have defiantly proclaimed support for a culture of life and have emphatically rejected the lobbying of those advocating for changing the law to allow doctors to kill their patients or assist in their suicide.

The New Zealand Parliament should follow the outstanding example set by the European Parliament and reject euthanasia and a culture of death. The sanctity of life, is an indivisible and universal value. It must be protected at all stages of life.

There are 751 Members in the European Parliament, only 95 Members signed the Declaration that included support for euthanasia. In other words 88% of members rejected the declaration which was sponsored by Spanish Member, Elena Valenciano. The Declaration was open for signing for three months, which provided sufficient time for members to consult with the people of the countries they represented.

The objective of the declaration was to call upon the Council of the European Union and the European Commission to identify the best end of life health services and promote them among European Union countries.

The declaration had this intrinsically evil provision included. “All European citizens, regardless of their nationality, who are in an advanced or terminal phase of an incurable illness, causing unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated, should be able to benefit from medical assistance to end their life with dignity”—Euthanasia.

The European Parliament is to be commended for this stunning rejection of a culture of death. The failure of this written declaration shows that the inherent dignity of every human being cannot be allowed to be the battleground for those who promote a culture of death under the guise of compassion.
