Multiple online polls show attitudes shifting in favour of new flag

Online polls are continuing to show growing support for a new flag for New Zealand, says Change the NZ Flag Chairman Lewis Holden.

Online polls are continuing to show growing support for a new flag for New Zealand, says Change the NZ Flag Chairman Lewis Holden.

In the past 24 hours, a Breakfast TV poll of almost 37,000 voters found 44% would vote for change, while 56% would prefer the status quo.

The poll follows a stuff.co.nz poll on of almost 22,000 people last week showing 49% favoured change versus 51% in favour of the old flag.

“New Zealanders are clearly warming to the new flag and we expect it will be a narrow result in favour of change,” Mr Holden said.

With just eight days to go until the flag referendum starts, Change the NZ Flag is confident its social media campaign is making a difference.

“We’ve reached more than a million people with our campaign and more than 200,000 people have viewed our video of high profile New Zealanders calling for change.

“Just today, Ian Ferguson - our most successful Olympian and the flag bearer at the 1988 Seoul Olympics – has joined the call for change.

“Ian is Olympic Royalty and one of our country’s greatest ambassadors. He joins current New Zealander of the Year Richie McCaw and a host of other leaders from all disciplines backing the fern and stars.”
