FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Board spearheads new way of working for Māori

A new way of working with Māori data has been employed by the Independent Māori Statutory Board through their data strategy. The strategy takes a practical approach to data collection and research opportunities. Through collaboration with key partners such as Statistics New Zealand and Auckland Council’s research unit, the Board will access quality data relevant to Māori outcomes in Tāmaki Makaurau for analysis and sharing. Ultimately this will provide high quality, cost-effective and relevant information to inform priorities and policy.

A new expert panel has been formed to guide the direction of the data collection and reporting for the Independent Māori Statutory Board who in turn advocates to the Auckland Council group on issues that affect Māori.

The eight member panel will be headed by respected Māori development champion Professor Sir Mason Durie. The members reflect a variety of viewpoints and are all expert in a number of areas within the wider Māori research and data community.

The panel will focus on strategies to collect, analyse and interpret high quality data that informs the monitoring and measuring of Māori cultural, social, economic and environmental outcomes. . This will allow for insights to understand and front-foot issues which are important to Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau.

The first meeting of the panel is being held today in Tāmaki Makaurau. Principal member, Professor Sir Mason Durie says “the panel will advise on the best way of capturing the voice of Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau allowing the formulation of fit-for-purpose data to assist in the prioritising, advice and advocacy of the Board.”

In 2012 the Board produced the Māori Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau., a long term, action-based plan derived from the aspirations of Auckland Māori. The plan provides a framework for monitoring outcomes and measuring changes to Māori wellbeing in the social, cultural, economic and environmental areas.

One of the outcomes of the data strategy will be the production of ‘The Māori Report’. The report will measure progress on the Board’s Māori Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau aimed at increasing Māori Wellbeing in Auckland. The Māori report will also provide data and information on progress of the Māori Plan by reporting on headline indicators within the Plan.

Independent Māori Statutory Board Chairman, David Taipari says, “the Board will utilise the panels feedback to advocate for matters that affect Māori”.
