The Government’s introduction of Kermadec Ocean
Sanctuary legislation to Parliament today is a long awaited
victory for the marine environment, says Forest & Bird
Marine Advocate Anton van Helden
After years of petitioning the Government for the protection of this remarkable area, Forest & Bird is very pleased to see the significant marine reserve coming to fruition.
“This is a very significant piece of global ocean protection as it safeguards the whole region of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands, one of the most diverse deep water habitats in the world,” says Mr van Helden.
“Large no-take protection areas are vital to the sustainability of our oceans and resilience in a fast changing world.”
“The Kermadecs make up the entire sub-tropical region of our EEZ. They are a remote and largely untouched part of New Zealand’s vast ocean area. When the legislation is enacted it will give protection to an array of species and eco-systems not found anywhere else within New Zealand waters.”
