QLDC media advisory - poverty workshop

QLDC media advisory - poverty workshop

A workshop on tackling poverty to be held in Queenstown at the end of the month is a chance to “shine some light” on what poverty means in this district, Mayor Vanessa van Uden says.

The one-day workshop on Tuesday 29 March is the first of a series that have branched out from a national TacklingPovertyNZ workshop, which was a joint initiative between the McGuinness Institute and the Treasury last December.

Mayor van Uden is opening the Queenstown event, where the speakers include Dr Girol Karacaoglu from the Treasury and Dame Diane Robertson, former CE of the Auckland City Mission and now Chair of the Data Futures Partnership.

They will speak at the morning session, along with six people who participated in the national workshop last year, to provide a national context for the local discussions.

Factors influencing poverty could include housing, income, jobs, isolation, education and transport. “If we can identify what the issues of poverty are here, then we can have an informed discussion about what we as a community can do, in partnership with the Government,” Mayor van Uden said.

The afternoon session will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing Queenstown as a community. Proposals for local solutions will be presented to a public event at 6pm that night in the Queenstown Memorial Centre.

Registrations are open for the all-day workshop as well as the presentations in the evening.
