Pukeahu a fitting place for Anzac Day remembrance
Pukeahu National War Memorial Park is a fitting place for commemoration and remembrance this Anzac Day, Paul James Chief Executive Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage said today.
“This year marks the centenary of the first Anzac Day services held in New Zealand and Pukeahu provides us with a place to gather, reflect and learn as we commemorate all those who have served our country,” Paul James said.
“Those first services, which naturally looked back to the previous year’s Gallipoli campaign, helped distressed communities make sense of the conflict’s terrible toll.
“Monuments erected throughout the country since 1916 are poignant reminders. Created as a legacy for the First World War Centenary Pukeahu is a modern day expression of New Zealand’s commitment to remember everyone affected by war.
“Pukeahu has established a new space in the centre of Wellington, which lets people explore and discover New Zealand’s military past. Features such as Ngā Tapuwae o te Kāhui Maunga garden, the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, the Hall of Memories and the Australian Memorial offer different opportunities for visitors to deepen their understanding of our shared history.
“Since opening on 18 April 2015 tens of thousands have visited Pukeahu to reflect on their own personal experience and to acknowledge New Zealand’s contribution to military conflict and peacekeeping missions throughout the world.
“Anzac Day Pukeahu will host many events, including Wellington City Council’sWW1 Remembered: A Light and Sound Show, the Dawn Service, the National Commemoration and The Last Post Ceremony. The Great War Exhibition in the former Dominion Building behind the National War Memorial will also be open over Anzac weekend.
“Anzac Day commemorations from dawn to dusk last year saw Pukeahu packed with people reflecting on this significant day and I am sure this will be the same again this year,” Paul James said.
