Masterton Perverts Democracy with Unelected Appointments

Masterton Perverts Democracy with Unelected Appointments

THURSDAY 5 MAY 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Democracy Action is deeply concerned by Masterton District Council’s move to appoint representatives of Wairarapa’s two iwi to the Council with full voting rights on its policy and finance, and audit and risk, committees. Democracy Action Chairman, Lee Short, says:

"Whenever this issue has gone to public referenda, the people of New Zealand have voted overwhelmingly against unelected appointments. It is imperative our system of government is democratic, and that each of us is equal under the law."

“If Kahungunu ki Wairarapa and Rangitane o Wairarapa want to influence the direction of the Council, they should have their representatives stand for elected office."
