Update on the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill

The Local Government and Environment Committee has received a time extension for its consideration of the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill. The new due date for the committee’s report is 6 September 2016.

The chair of the committee, Scott Simpson, says “This bill seeks to make substantial changes to resource management law and it is important that the committee give the proposal, as well as public submissions, due consideration. The committee has concluded hearings and is now working towards reporting its recommendations to Parliament in September.”

This bill proposes comprehensive reforms to six Acts and is 180 pages long. Due to the bill’s complexity, submissions were open for nearly 3 months, significantly longer than standard select committee practice. It has been the subject of strong public interest and the committee has received over 750 submissions. Public hearings were held over a 2 month period in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
