NZers can't even afford to be tenants in their own country
14 July 2016
Press Release Sue Henry (Housing Lobby) :
"Now New Zealanders can't even afford to be tenants in their own country?"
"Between homelessness and home ownership - what about the huge and growing number of renters?" asks Housing Lobby Spokesperson Sue Henry.
"The City that generations of Aucklanders paid for and built up over decades and called home, has now become an exclusionary zone."
"Auckland is now preserved mainly for the well-heeled newcomers to the country and others with massive landholdings who still reside overseas, land-banking to rachet up property values in order to generate lucrative tax-free capital gains."
"This has well and truly put rental accommodation out of the reach of struggling Aucklanders."
"The time has come NOW for intervention to be applied to the rental property sector."
"There must be a cap on residential rents, with on-going regulated rent controls, and this should of course be coupled with secure long-term tenancies and more rights for tenants, as opposed to being currently treated like revolving door 'cash cows'."
"The importance of a secure, safe and stable home living environment cannot be under-estimated."
