Te Tai Tokerau select member for Te Mātāwai
Te Waihoroi Shortland has been selected as the Te Tai Tokerau representative to Te Mātāwai – the new national organisation set to lead the revitalisation of the Māori language on behalf of iwi and Māori.
Te Waihoroi Shortland has a history of advancing the Māori language and customs including through an extensive career in broadcasting, film and radio. In 2003 he won Best Actor at the NZ Film Awards for his role in the Māori Merchant of Venice. He actively participates and advises on the Māori language within the region of Te Tai Tokerau and throughout the country.
Nora Rameka spokesperson for the selection group, said the applicants were all of a very high calibre. She said Te Waihoroi brings a wealth of experience to Te Mātāwai.
Te Tai Tokerau is one of the seven iwi clusters establised under Te Ture mō Te Reo Māori 2016 (Māori Language Act)
Nora Rameka said iwi and hapū of Te Tai Tokerau had actively participated in many hui concerning the Māori Language Act and the selection process leading to Shortland’s position onTe Mātāwai and Te Tai Tokerau would continue to support him.
