The Community Law Manual
2016-2017!
The Community Law Manual is an easy-to-read, practical guide to everyday New Zealand law. Everyone who needs to understand New Zealand law needs this resource. Make sure you have the correct information by making sure you have the most recent copy of the Community Law Manual.
This edition has had a lot of legal work – to keep pace with rapid law change and to continue to refocus on law that's most useful for our most vulnerable. It also has two brand new chapters and a new bilingual translation of our chapter about Te reo Māori.
Common crimes is a new chapter which sets out information about some common minor offences that people face in the criminal courts, particularly when facing charges for the first time. These include: shoplifting, tagging and graffiti, assault, drug offences (like possession of cannabis), pāua poaching and other fisheries offences. This chapter is a major, missing piece of the puzzle for the Community Law Manual and provides practical information drawn from real-life cases for anyone facing any of these charges.
A death in the family is another new chapter aimed at helping you and your whānau when one of your loved ones has died. Building on our existing Wills chapter, it explains the kinds of things you’ll need to do – from dealing with the coroner to financial support to making sure all the paperwork for the burial or cremation is completed. This chapter also empowers whānau Māori about their rights in relation to tikanga, tūpāpaku and tangihanga.
Every year, we update the manual to make sure it is legally accurate and this year we have taken in some major changes to the law, including the new Health and Safety at Work Act and the new Harmful Digital Communications Act.
We've overhauled our employment, harassment and cyber-bullying, Work and Income, Child, Youth and Family and Māori land chapters, and we've updated the remaining 30-odd chapters bringing them up to date with the law and improving the language in them to make them more accessible.
WHY BUY THE COMMUNITY LAW MANUAL?
When you consider the range of issues children, their families, and other at-risk Kiwis grapple with on a day-to-day basis, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But with legal problems, often the hardest step is in fact the first step – reaching out to find information and the best way forward.
By buying a copy of the Community Law Manual, you're directly contributing to a more accessible justice system for all Kiwis. Purchasing a hard copy of the Manual enables us to keep updating and improving it, year after year, and to continue to publish free legal information online.
