Suicide notes talk too late
World Suicide Prevention Day
2016
Press release
8TH SEPTEMBER 2016: Globally, the rate of male suicide is alarmingly high. In New Zealand, on average one man each day will take his own life; around the world, we lose one man to suicide every minute of every day. This is an unspoken social crisis that demands immediate action.
This Saturday, September 10th, is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). The Movember Foundation is using the day to give male suicide the urgent attention it deserves, with the launch of a short video entitled Suicide Notes Talk Too Late.
The video features men sharing their own personal experience with suicide and has a powerful but simple message: “Men, let’s talk when things get tough.” Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling alone with their issues.
Movember Foundation CEO Owen Sharp comments, “We wanted to create a powerful piece of content that would ignite an important conversation about suicide, the complex issues that surround it and what everyone can do to address it. Conversations that we hope will save lives and prevent the far-reaching and painful consequences for the families, friends and communities of the men tragically lost every day. It’s an uncomfortable conversation, but it’s one that needs to be had, here in New Zealand and around the world.
“It’s time to break this silence and recognise that a vital part of overcoming even the biggest problems is for men to talk about the significant changes and challenges going on in their lives,” Sharp adds.
The Movember Foundation is asking people to help grow the conversation on WSPD by sharing the video through their social networks and channels. Without encouraging conversation around the issue of suicide and showing ways that can help, the issue will remain an unspoken crisis.

This campaign forms part of the Movember Foundation’s suicide prevention strategic approach. It aims to encourage men to reach out, particularly during times of change and when things get tough. Suicide Notes Talk Too Late asks people to take action sooner rather than later, reducing the risk of suicide.
